The Zottl family’s house is situated right in the center of Weissenkirchen. The family has been producing wine there since 1917, but the origins of the house reach back to the Middle Ages. Veltliner dominates the range of wines while Riesling is in terms of quantity only on place two but with regards to quality, the interpretations from the Steinriegl and the Achleiten perfectly complement their repertoire. The Zottl range impresses not just on account of diversity (they also produce Muskateller, Chardonnay and Zweigelt), but also owing to their concern for sustainability. The family’s philosophy is to operate in harmony with nature, and they work the soil according to ecological criteria. In spite of the newest winemaking technology in their cellar, they attempt to keep interventions to a minimum in order to capture the typical aroma profiles of the grapes. The wines are impressive as such, but it is highly recommendable to sample them in the family’s own Heurigen. In addition to classics from the Wachau, the Zottls also serve fish from the Waldviertel, cheese from Bregenz as well as homemade spirits. If that proves too much to take in on one day, guests are very welcome to stay the night and to continue their exploration the next day.
